VIRGINIA BEACH Warren Harris, the city's economic development director, became a member of the Cavalier Golf Yacht Club in January at the city's expense. The country club, with its own marina overlooking Linkhorn Bay, is charging the city an $18,000 initiation fee spread across five years. The city also has to pay separately for meals, $400 in monthly dues and for events at the club.

NORFOLK Commissioner of Revenue Sharon McDonald has hired a public relations specialist at taxpayer expense in an effort to burnish her office's reputation. Charles Hartig, a longtime TV reporter who worked most of the last 11 years as a spokesman for the City Council, was hired as a Chief Deputy II on Sept. 1, according to Nancy Olivo, the city's director of human resources.

GLOUCESTER COUNTY Police are investigating the deaths of a couple inside their Woods Cross Road home as a possible murder-suicide, the Gloucester County Sheriffrsquo;s Department told WVEC.com. Robert Harper, 51, and Lisa Harper, 40, were found in their home near the intersection with George Washington Highway shortly before 3 p.m. Wednesday, WVEC.com reported.

Leaks are just one of the problems at Portsmouth's aging courthouse. Judges, concerned with the public's safety and their own, have been pushing for a fix since the 1990s.
